The Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia is located in an eclectic style building designed by the local architect Antonio Tenreiro, and was inaugurated in 1955.  The main façade faces the garden of San Carlos and you enter the building through a semi-circular arch crowned by the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Galicia.  This arch also forms a passageway that connects the garden with the Rúa San Carlos.

The archive is an institution created in 1755 to safeguard the documentation of the Royal Court of Galicia and its replacement, the Territorial Court of A Coruña.  During the 19th and 20th centuries, it also began to receive funds from other institutions such as the Royal Intendancy of Galicia and the former Post Office. It currently serves as the Galician Historical Archive and Provincial Historical Archive.

The four floors of the building have a reception area, exhibition room, meeting room, conference room, consultation rooms, technical work rooms, laboratories, and restoration workshops. Inside there are documents of great historical value such as the Ojea map of Galicia from 1598, a tomb of the monastery of Sobrado dos Monxes or the court case of Manuel Blanco Romasanta.
